Explore the many dive
sites in the area The wreck was formerly the vertical wreck Koho Maru which meant “The Light of Japan” . She was 60 meters long and had Japanese registration when she was bought by a Thai company and renamed the “Pak 1” or Pak Wan. It was originally designed as a liquid petroleum gas tanker. After she was sold to the Thai company she was converted to carry liquid fertilizer. The final voyage is believed to have taken place in 1995 since there were flares found onboard dated that year. Lloyds of London still has never been told to register the boat as having sunk. Only 3 of the 10 man crew survived and one of them said, that the incident happened around 3 o’clock in the morning when the ship was in a heavy storm near the border of Cambodia off the coast of Trat Province. All the crew were sleeping , both in the rear cabin and the small cabin under the bow. He said he heard something explode loudly in the stern and suddenly the ship started to capsize rapidly. All the crew sleeping in the rear cabin died, only those in the small cabin under the bow survived. She now sits about 35 meters below the surface. The bow was damaged, they believe, by a passing ship that must have hit her. The ship is not broken up like many ships. Her paint is still visible but the coral is starting to take over and she will become a coral reef in time. There are many large fish in the area including Barracuda, Grouper, Manta Ray and Whale Sharks.
